Una tarde de verano
(La hermana cautiva)
romances y cantares
Una tarde de verano
pasí por la morería,
y vi una mora lavando
al pie de una fuente fría.

Yo la dishi "mora linda,
yo la dishi mora bella,
desha beber mis caballos
de esas aguas cristalinas".

"No soy mora, el caballero
que soy de España nacida
que me cautivaron moros
días de Pascua florida".

"Si quieres venir conmigo
a España te llevaría;
y la ropa, el caballero
donde yo la dejaría"?

"La que es de seda y grana
en mis caballos se iría,
ma lo que no sirva nada
por el río tornaría"
*One Summer Afternoon
    (The Captive Sister)
Al llegar “en ca” sus padres
la niña llora y suspira,
"por que lloras, niña bella,
por que lloras niña linda"?

"Lloro porque en estos campos
mi padre a cazar venia,
con mi hermanito Alexandro,
y toda su compañía'".

"Abrir puertas y ventanas
balcones y galerías,
que por traer a una esposa
vos traigo a una hermana mía".
One summer afternoon
I passed by the Moorish quarter,
I saw a Moorish girl washing clothes
by a fountain of cold water.

I told her, "pretty Moorish girl",
I told her, "beautiful Moorish girl,
let my horses drink
from these crystalline waters".

"I am not  Moorish  my knight,
I am a Spaniard.
I was kidnapped by the Moors,
one flowery Easter day".

"If you like to come with me,
I will take you to Spain".
"And the clothes my knight,
where shall I leave them"?

"The silk and linen
will be carried on my horse,
and what is of no use,
shall be dropped in the river".

Upon arrival at his parents home,
 the girl cries and sighs.
"Why do you cry pretty girl,
why do you cry beautiful girl"?

"I cry, for in this countryside
my father used to hunt,
with my little brother Alejandro
accompanied by all his friends".

"Open  doors and  windows,
balconies and galleries.
Instead of bringing  a wife,
I have brought you my sister".
